How to get your business recommended by ChatGPT and other AI assistants

Short answer: AI assistants recommend businesses they can clearly understand and trust. To be recommended, your website needs to say plainly what you do, where you do it and for whom; answer the questions customers actually ask; and match the details that appear about you elsewhere online, like your map listing and reviews.

You do not need to be a big brand. Small, specialist businesses often do well, because their websites can answer specific questions better than anyone else.

Why this matters now

More and more customers skip the list of search results and simply ask: “Who’s the best electrician near me?” or “Which workshop can repair my pump this week?” The assistant replies with two or three names. If you are not one of them, you are not even in the running.

Search engines are moving the same way. Google now shows AI-written summaries above the normal results for many questions, built from the websites it trusts most.

How AI assistants decide who to recommend

Each assistant works a little differently, but they all rely on the same kinds of signals:

  1. Clarity. Can it tell, without guessing, what your business does, where and for whom?
  2. Direct answers. Does your website answer real questions in plain sentences that are easy to quote?
  3. Consistency. Do your name, address, services and phone number match across your website, map listing and directories?
  4. Trust signals. Genuine reviews, qualifications, clear prices or price ranges, and real contact details.
  5. Technical readability. Can the assistant’s crawler actually read your pages, and does your site describe itself with structured data?

Seven changes that make the biggest difference

1. Say exactly what you do, in the first sentence

“Welcome to our website” tells an AI nothing. “Certified pump repairs for industrial and domestic customers across Kent, with same-week turnaround” tells it almost everything.

2. Give every main service its own page

One page that lists ten services is hard to recommend for any of them. A clear page per service, each explaining who it is for and what it costs, gives the assistant something specific to point to.

3. Answer real customer questions

Add a frequently asked questions section with the questions customers ask you on the phone: How much does it cost? How long does it take? Do you cover my area? Start each answer with a direct, one-sentence answer, then add detail.

4. Publish your prices, or at least a range

Assistants are often asked about cost. A website that says “from £250” can be quoted. One that says “call for a price” usually cannot.

5. Add structured data

Structured data is a small block of code that describes your business in a format machines understand: your services, location, opening hours, prices and frequently asked questions. Visitors never see it, but search engines and AI assistants read it.

6. Keep your details consistent everywhere

Make sure your business name, address and phone number are identical on your website, your map listing and the main directories. Inconsistent details make you look less trustworthy to both people and machines.

7. Let the AI crawlers in

Some websites accidentally block the crawlers that AI assistants use. Check your site’s robots file allows them, and that your pages load quickly and work without errors.

What to avoid

  • Stuffing keywords into every sentence. Assistants favour clear, natural writing.
  • Hiding key details in images or PDFs, where they are harder to read.
  • Fake reviews. They break platform rules, and they destroy trust when spotted.
